Jobs, housing and fear of over-development are the issues Nigel Farage aims to tackle in Sandwich.

The Ukip prospective parliamentary candidate for South Thanet visited Sandwich market at the Guildhall Forecourt today to talk to traders and shoppers.

He says among some of the issues he will be tackling is the two sides to Sandwich.

He said: “There are comfortable people living in Sandwich but for those at the not so comfortable end of it, the real problem is their wages haven’t gone up for years. Some of them are struggling to find work and the cost of living hasn’t really got any cheaper so I think money really is an issue. The other concern I think is just a little bit up the road in Thanet there is a proposal to build 12,000 houses and what that could mean for Sandwich."

Despite it being a little early in the day, Aileen O’Leary, manager at the Market Inn, brought the politician a pint from the pub. She said she doesn’t support Ukip but wanted a laugh - and it seemed to go down well.

Mr Farage said: “It’s been good but mixed feedback. Not everyone is going to vote for me, this has been a predominantly Conservative area.

“We had a meeting here at the Guildhall in the week and we pretty much packed the place to the rafters, I’m in the market today and I’m out in the villages on Saturday - we’re campaigning hard.

“People say Nigel’s a party leader how does he find time? Well, I’ve got to find time haven’t I? Unlike Mr Miliband and Mr Cameron who can pretty much take their own parliamentary seats for granted, I’ve got to win this. I’ve got a lot to do.”
