Thrills await at sailing club's open day

SPILLS and thrills will be on offer on Sunday during an open day organised by Sandwich Bay Sailing and Water Ski-ing Club.

The event, being staged between 11am-4pm event is aimed at promoting safety on the water.

Two RNLI lifeboats will be in attendance from the Ramsgate and Walmer stations. Crews will demonstrate lifesaving from capsized craft. The Maritime Coastguard Agency will also attend to assist with the rescues.

The club’s safety boat will be used to demonstrate launching and recovery onto its trailer.

RNLI officers will also be offering free safety checks to boat owners and the RNLI’s road show caravan will be displaying lifeboat information with memorabilia for sale.

The club’s sailing section will be instructing young members in the art of seamanship and the rigging of dinghies, and water skiers will be demonstrating the art of single, double and kneeboard ski-ing.

A water-ski simulator will be provided for visitors to try their hand without getting wet.

The new sport from America known as kite surfing is already attracting a large following. Club members will be showing their skills, with participants flying both on the water and with the use of land buggies.

Visitors will also be able to try a trip behind a ski-boat on the club ‘Banana’ or take the helm of a sailing dinghy.
