The friends and family of a popular cyclist who died after coming off his bike have said their final goodbyes to him.

Steve Wand, 58, suffered fatal injuries in a fall in Hosey Hill, Westerham in March.

Five ambulances and the air ambulance were called to the site, but the 58-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes poured in for the father-of-two, who was a keen sportsman and a member of several clubs across the south-east.

Mr Wand, born in Beckenham, began training at Greenwich Tritons. He later became a member of the Sidcup Cycle Centre, Bexley Masters Swimming Club, Nemes Nutters Swimming Club, VC Elan and CS Avanti.

Loved ones paid their final respects at his funeral, held at Eltham Crematorium on April 22.

His wife, Janice, who he met in 1985 and married in 1987, said he had a love for life and put his heart into all of his passions.

Speaking to the Kent Messenger she said: "Tragically his colourful life has been cut far too short, and we will all miss him ever so much.

"Our only comfort is that he left this world doing something he truly loved."

More than 50 cyclists arrived at Mrs Wand's house in Bexleyheath and travelled behind the funeral procession to the church.

Mrs Wand said: "It was a very emotional day. The service itself was packed out.

"It was beautifully run by the reverend Martin Henwood who is also a family friend, he even sat next to Steve at our niece's wedding in Italy last year.

"My daughter Ruby's guitar teacher Graham Corbould played and sang Let it Be and Lord of the Dance.

"It was the saddest day of my life, apart from when I got told the tragic news, but it is a day I will never forget.

"I want to say thank you for all the amazing support from my friends and the different cycle and triathlon groups. The constant support from the Bexley Athletics Club has been amazing."

Mr Wand leaves behind his wife Janice, daughter, Ruby and son, Travis.

An inquest into his death is due to be held at Gravesend Old Town Hall on Wednesday, June 8.
