A LORRY driver had a narrow escape from death after he was involved in an accident on the M25 in Kent but he suffered serious injuries.

The man, thought to be in his 50s, lost both legs below the knee in the accident which involved two lorries.

The emergency services were called to the accident involving two lorries on the anticlockwise carriageway of the motorway between junctions five and four at 11pm on Sunday.

A Sevenoaks ambulance crew and an officer worked with a BASICS nurse, three members of staff from Farnborough hospital and fire crews from Kent and London to free the man.

He was trapped for more than two hours as medical staff and fire crews attempted to free him.

Bob Digby, officer in charge of the scene, said: “A great deal of effort from all the emergency services went into saving this gentleman, who lost both his legs below the knee in the accident. Our main concern was that he didn’t lose too much blood as we attempted to free him from the cab.

“We had fantastic support from BASICS nurse Tony Kemp and the doctors and nurse from Farnborough hospital. He is a very lucky man to be alive.”

BASICS nurse Tony Kemp, who was on scene soon after the ambulance crew arrived, said: “This was a spectacular effort from everybody that was involved. The support we had from the hospital was excellent. We were very fortunate to have an A&E consultant, A&E doctor and nurse, who were about to go off duty, when we requested a medical team to assist us in the rescue. We also had a consultant waiting for our arrival at Farnborough Hospital”.

The driver of the other lorry, in his 30s, was also taken to Farnborough hospital suffering from back pain.
