Serious crash involving two lorries on A21 Sevenoaks bypass prompts police to close the road while they investigate

A highways worker has been crushed to death by a lorry while carrying out road repairs.

The 20-year-old Tonbridge man was pronounced dead after the accident on the A21 Sevenoaks bypass at about midnight last night.

Investigators have been at the scene of the crash all morning.

Police sealed off the south-bound carriageway from the A25 sliproad to Morley's roundabout, and traffic was diverted until 10am.

The section is currently undergoing roadworks, and had been closed to traffic when the accident happened.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 11.59pm on Thursday 15 January to a report that a man had been crushed by a heavy goods vehicle on the southbound carriage way of the A21.

"Officers and Secamb attended the incident which occurred close on a stretch of the road between Sevenoaks and Hildenborugh."

The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We can confirm that a road worker, working on behalf of the Highways Agency, has died in an incident overnight on the A21 near Sevenoaks in Kent.

"Our deepest sympathies are with this person’s family, friends and colleagues at this time.

"We are liaising with Kent Police and the Health & Safety Executive to help their investigations and while these continue it would not be appropriate to comment further."
