A bomb disposal squad was sent to Sevenoaks today to detonate a Second World War smoke grenade.

Officers from Kent Police were called to the scene and uploaded footage to show the explosion, which took place in a woodland near Dibden Lane.

They tweeted: "PCSO Joe and PC James have attended an unexploded wartime bomb in Sevenoaks.

"Safe to say EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) disposed of it appropriately."

It is not yet clear where or how the device was discovered.

Army spokesman Major Jamie Woodfine said: "An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended a task in Sevenoaks yesterday afternoon at the request of Kent Police.

"A Second World War smoke mortar grenade was identified and safely destroyed in place.

Kent Police says they were called at 2.14pm on Sunday, April 12 to a report of what was believed to be an unexploded wartime device found in woodland.

A spokesman said: "Officers attended and put a cordon in place for experts from the EOD unit who assessed the item and safely detonated the device."
