Britain's greatest Winter Olympian Lizzy Yarnold has revealed she is expecting her first child.

The Sevenaoks-born multiple skeleton champion, who retired last month, joked she will have to switch to the luge, which involves competitors sliding down slopes on their back, as she announced the news on Twitter.

Ms Yarnold, 30, wrote her name into the history books when she claimed her second Winter Olympic gold medal in the skeleton in Pyeongchang this year, becoming the first British athlete to retain a title, having won the same event in Sochi in 2014.

The former Maidstone Grammar School for Girls pupil married engineer James Roche in 2016, who co-designed her sled while working for McLaren Applied Technologies.

Revealing her happy news, she wrote: "Looks like I'll need to do luge for a while! James and I have a little one on the way."

Earlier this month, Ms Yarnold picked up an honorary degree from the University of Kent marking her illustrious career.

Crowds turned out to see her on an open bus tour in April after her victory in Pyeongchang.
