Sheppey Crossing closed while police recover dead bird

A bridge had to be shut to traffic this afternoon while police recovered a dead bird.

The body of a swan was spotted on the Sheppey Crossing at about 2.15pm.

Officers shut the Island-bound carriageway and drivers had to use the old Kingsferry Bridge.

A police spokesman confirmed: "They quickly closed it so the swan could be safely removed."

Swans are among a number of birds that must be reported if their bodies are found. Others include ducks, geese and gulls.
