Plans to paint Sheppey Crossing 'hot pink'

Well done if you spotted our April Fool!

Here's how it read...

The Sheppey Crossing is to be turned into a major tourist attraction.

In a bid to increase the number of visitors to the Island, council bosses want the bridge to become the ‘jewel in Swale’s crown’.

Plans are now being drawn-up to paint the entire structure an eye-catching, fluorescent colour.

The idea was first mooted at a meeting back in January, but was kept secret to surprise Sheppey residents.

A consultation has begun for people to give suggestions on what colour it should be painted.

Three shades have been shortlisted – ‘neon green’, ‘hot pink’ and ‘mellow yellow’.

Tom Shamfaver, head of Kent’s Roads Department, said: “People will definitely travel from far and wide to snap a selfie in front of what we hope will be Britain’s brightest bridge.

“It’s going to look absolutely stunning and everyone we’ve told so far has been super supportive.

“We just hope the Island is going to step-up and pick a really great colour – we’ve already consulted Faversham residents on it and they’ve had some great ideas.”

But some residents greeted the proposal with scepticism, arguing a couple of big department stores on Sheppey would be enough to boost tourism.

Joan Waymed, 69, of Alma Road, Sheerness, said: “Look, the painting thing is okay. But just think how many more people would fancy a visit to the Island if we had a Marks and Spencer – it could even be fluorescent green.”
