There was drama in Queenborough on Sheppey when a stolen car crashed into the back of the town's historic Guildhall in the middle of the night.

A white two-door vehicle slammed into the archway which separates the High Street from Whiteway Road.

Neighbours rushed outside just before 1am to find the front of the car stoved in.

It is reported that the car's occupants, a man and a woman, fled the scene using another vehicle. One witness said the woman who had been in the car had blood pouring from a leg wound.

The witness said: "We heard the crash and were one of the first on scene.

"The driver fled. Looks like they flew up the Whiteway and lost control or decided to try fitting through the alley.

"Our concern is how regularly this happens and the amount of cars flying up the Whiteway. We need some form of speed measures before someone is killed. We are sick of it. These drivers don't give a damn.

"They are taking laps of the Whiteway and North Road through the town every evening. All we hear is screeching tyres and accelerating."

Fire crews were called to make the car and the area safe, the incident happened during the early hours of Sunday, October 10.

Cllr Cameron Beart said: "Swale council's contractor was asked to inspect and make safe the area the following morning. Works will be planned to carry out any necessary repairs."

The crash happened shortly after a "car meet" at the nearby Neats Court retail park but there is no evidence that the two were connected.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 12.43am on Sunday to a report that a car had been in collision with a wall in Queenborough High Street.

The owner of the car was traced and said it had been stolen from the Sterling Road area earlier that night.

The Guildhall, the first on the Isle of Sheppey, was built in 1794 and is home to the town's museum. It still has a court room, now used by the town council, and a dungeon.
