A wedding decoration might have caught the eyes of Sheppey motorists last week.

An archway decked with fairy lights was erected outside a house in Halfway Road, Halfway, last Thursday.

It was to celebrate the marriage of former Danley Middle School and Highsted Grammar School pupil Rezwana Islam, 24, to Shaful Khan, 27.

The house is where she lives with her parents, mum Firuza Khatun and dad
Matizul Islam.

They are originally from Bangladesh and Mr Islam said the traditional archway is to signify the wedding and to show that something special is happening.

The couple married on Sunday at the Oasis Banqueting Hall in Barking, east London, watched by more than 800 family and friends.

An archway was put up in Halfway Road, Halfway, to celebrate the wedding of Rezwana Islam and Shaful Khan. She is pictured here with her brother Ashraful Islam and Firuza Khatun.

They met through family and, as is traditional for Muslim women, Rezwana will keep her father’s surname.

She and her new husband will be moving to Aldgate in east London.

Mr Islam, who is a chef at Koh-I-Noor in Minster Road, said: “My daughter getting married is special to us.

“I felt very proud on Sunday.

“Lots of people were asking about the archway – it’s new to here.”
