Drinkers were stunned when they looked up from their beer to see police raiding their club.

Officers with sniffer dogs were conducting a raid on Minster Working Men's Club.

Police were invited to raid Minster Working Men's Club, Sheppey by club managers to check whether any drugs had been taken on the premises

But club bosses were not alarmed as they had asked the cops to pay them a visit on November 11.

Ivan Webster who managers the club in Union Road, Minster, said: "We invited the police to conduct a sweep of the club for any signs of drug usage to ensure it remains a family-friendly, drug-free environment where our members can sit, relax and enjoy a drink."

He added: "This may have appeared as a bit of a shock to our members who were in the club at the time for which we apologise. But we are very pleased to announce that no evidence of drugs or their usage was found."

The sweep included a forensic check which could detect if any drugs had been present within the last 30 days and concluded that the club was clean.

Mr Webster said: "The police were very complimentary about the results of the sweep and the running of the club, so much so that they took some new membership forms with them when they left."

He said the club's committee was delighted its zero tolerance on drugs policy was working.

He added: "We've invited the police to drop in for a coffee and the use of our facilities whenever they are passing, so members should not be surprised if they see police officers in the club in the future."

Club members are also encouraged to report suspicious activity to staff or committee members.
