Crash in freezing fog closes Sheppey Crossing

Police have now reopened the A249 at the Sheppey Crossing following a car crash in freezing fog this morning.

Huge tailbacks were earlier being reported as traffic was diverted across the old Kingsferry lift bridge.

A motorist at the scene said earlier: "Police have closed off the entrance to the bridge at Iwade and diverting traffic across the old Kingsferry Bridge.

"The traffic queue is snaking right back to the Grovehurst roundabout."

He added: "I can see one ambulance parked at the top of the bridge but it is so foggy here you can hardly see further than 10 feet in front of you.

"The mist has come up from the Swale and covered the bridge."

The accident happened just before 8am at the height of the Monday morning rush-hour.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Trust said: "We had a call at 7.50am reporting a road traffic collision. One ambulance crew attended but no one required hospital treatment."

Police they were called at 7.45am following a collision on the A2489 Sheppey Crossing.

A spokesman said: "The incident involved one vehicle. No injuries were reported. Officers attended and the road was reopened at around 9.45am."

Train passengers were also suffering disruptions after Southeastern announced signalling problems at Kemsley. Trains between Sittingbourne and Sheerness were delayed. A response crew was sent. The fault was repaired a little after 11am.
