The Sheppey Crossing was shut to drivers trying to get off the island this morning due to a broken down car.

The bridge had been closed to allow recovery services to remove the vehicle from the carriageway, which has no hard shoulders.

Drivers were diverted to use the old crossing.

Traffic queued back on the Lower Road to the junction with Barton Hill Drive.

Police were called to deal with the broken down car at 8.30am.

A spokesman said: "The incident happened on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway and, to ensure public safety, a road closure has been enforced."

KCC Highways confirmed the crossing had reopened at 10.40am.
