Spanner attack in St George's Avenue, Sheerness

Police are reviewing CCTV footage following a reported attack in which a motorist was assaulted by a spanner-wielding attacker.

Officers were called to St George's Avenue, Sheerness, at 12.23pm today to reports of an altercation between the occupants of two cars.

A witness reported that a male driver was struck several times with a weapon.

However, at this stage police have not identified or heard from any potential victims.

Officers are continuing to make inquiries and have contacted the Island's hospital and are reviewing any possible CCTV.

Another eyewitness said how he was in traffic when he saw the incident unfold.

He said he saw a man walking down St George's Avenue towards a BMW which was about to turn into the High Street.

The attacker was carrying an adjustable spanner and shouting: "Come on then, do you want some?"

He then started to hit the driver through the open window while passers-by looked on.

According to the witness, who asked not to be named, the motorist managed to get out of the car and chase the attacker down St George's Avenue where he caught up with him and a brawl began.

He then ran back to his car and drove off.
