Epic flight of Dutch wedding balloon ends in Sheerness

A wedding balloon sent by a couple who married in the Netherlands travelled more than 240 miles and landed in a Sheerness garden.

Roger and Carol Betts, of Hawthorn Avenue, found the memento last Sunday morning.

Attached to it was a note from the happy pair, which Minster Gatehouse volunteer Mr Betts managed to translate.

It was from Pietre and Veroniek, who asked for whoever discovered it to write back and let them know where it had landed and the time and date.

Mr and Mrs Betts responded with the information as well as a letter of congratulations to the couple.

The balloon had travelled 242.2 miles – all the way from Roosendaal, a city in the southern Netherlands.

Mr Betts, 69, said: “I did think of sending it on its way again, but worried about animals picking it up and choking. So it’s now hovering in our conservatory waiting for
the grandchildren to come
and play.

“Saturday night was a bit blustery and wet, and the white ribbon was soaked, as was the label, so I guess it was the rain that brought it down.

“Let’s hope Pietre and Veroniek have as long and happy life as me and Carol.”
