A charity worker has spoken about the frightening moment an angry client began throwing things around and threatening her.

Sue Percival was abused by Richard Allum at the Island Partnership in Trinity Road, Sheerness, earlier this year.

He admitted charges of assault by beating and using threatening, abusive or insulting words and was sentenced to 14 days in prison for each offence.

Ms Percival, of Warden Bay, is a work programme adviser and work support adviser for the organisation, which aims to help people find employment.

She was in the reception area on Tuesday, February 25, when 46-year-old Allum came in.

Ms Percival said: “I said ‘You haven’t got an appointment’ and he kicked off.

“He tried to smash a cabinet and was kicking and punching walls and doors but me and the receptionist were able to get behind the double door and put our weight against it to stop him.

“It was scary when he started the threats – he said he was going to make me his personal project and that he knew where I lived.

“We were worried about the other customers in the reception area and eventually he stormed off.

“It was frightening. Afterwards when we thought how it could have been worse – it could have been quite nasty.”

The 53-year-old said the incident lasted about 10 minutes and during that time he threw a computer monitor and hurled a piece of cardboard which hit her.

She says Allum had never presented himself as a violent person before and most of the people she comes into contact with there are fine.

“It’s my perfect job – working with people and helping people in the community,” she added.

“It’s a brilliant place to work and it hasn’t affected me – I won’t let something like that ruin my life.”

Allum, of St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, was jailed for 12 months for affray in March after attacking Dr Khilan Mistry at St George’s Medical Centre in the town.
