THE leader of Britain's Rock 'n"' Roll Loony Party has become the new Mayor of an historic Kent town. Chris Driver,

was selected last night by fellow town councillors at Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey.

Mr Driver, known also as "Screwy", was elected to the town council two years ago, and has spent the last year as deputy mayor to Labour party member Mick Constable.

Although Queenborough has its own Mayor because of the town's tradition and history, its authority has parish council status.

Major decisions are taken by Swale Borough Council, and Mr Driver was unsuccessful in a bid to be elected to that body earlier this month, although he did attract more than 300 votes.

As Mayor of Queenborough he is entitled to wear an impressive chain of office. But he took over the role last night at The Guildhall, Queenborough, dressed in customary Loony gear including top hat and badges.

Mr Driver said: I am well aware that on certain occasions as Mayor I will have to tone things down, but I will certainly be sticking to my Loony principles."
