The new runway at Heathrow could be built in Sheerness.

Representatives from Heathrow Airport will today visit Peel Ports, one of the sites in the running to help deliver the new runway.

It is the latest stop in the airport’s nationwide tour of the 65 longlisted sites bidding to play a part in one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects.

Successful sites will participate in off-site construction of the new runway, spreading the jobs and economic benefits of expansion, while mitigating the impact on the airport’s local communities.

The Heathrow expansion is expected to deliver up to £30billion in economic benefits and up to 33,200 new jobs across the south east.

Nigel Milton, director of communications at Heathrow Airport, will take a tour of the site this afternoon with representatives from Peel Ports Group, in Sheerness.

He said: “We’re very excited to be in Kent today seeing first-hand how the Port of Sheerness site from Peel Ports Group could help to deliver Heathrow expansion.

"The four logistics hubs will be essential to our plan to ensure that the benefits of expansion spread across the whole country while enabling us to incorporate innovative construction methods while honouring our commitments to the airport’s local communities by minimising the impact on them.”
