POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a young man was smashed over the head with a glass while out with friends at a bar.

The unprovoked assault happened when the victim, a 19-year-old man, was standing outside in the smoking area of Bar One in Sheerness High Street.

An altercation began between an unknown man and woman and the victim, who lives locally, attempted to calm the situation down.

While doing so, a second man approached him from behind and smashed a glass over his head. The victim suffered a large cut to his forehead which needed treatment by paramedics at the scene.
