Sheppey head coach Frank Davis says his players would suffer badly if the club are relegated from Kent 1.

Davis is still awaiting clarification from the RFU as to whether Sheppey will be relegated following league restructuring.

Sheppey beat bottom side Askeans 44-7 in their final game of the season on Saturday and finished second bottom.

Davis said: “It would be a shame if we drop down as we need to play the type of rugby that Kent 1 offers us. The gulf is quite big and it would be good to have our youngsters playing under pressure.

“The main difference in Kent 2 is the quality of the teams. You can turn up one week and thrash someone 100-0, then the next week you’ll be involved in a 3-0 dog-fight.

“Every game in Kent 1 is consistently hard.”

Ethan Roach (2), Dean Eley, Chris Champ and Dave Marsden were amongst the try scorers as Sheppey thrashed Askeans.

Despite finishing second-bottom, Davis is pleased with the club’s progress.

He added: “I was delighted for Dave Marsden on Saturday. He has come in during the season and couldn’t tackle or pass. But he has got raw ability and is now probably one of our best defenders.”

Sheppey face Old Williamsonians in the first round of the Kent Salver on Saturday (April 25).
