The Island has seen heavy snowfall overnight which resulted in the Sheppey Crossing being closed.

Police were called to a crash on the crossing, which involved one car, and closed the bridge at 11.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).

Traffic was diverted over the Kingsferry Bridge from Cowstead Corner and the A249 from Iwade was also closed on the mainland side.

No one was injured in the accident.

The bridge was reopened at 4.10am today (Wednesday).

Swale council's rubbish collections have also been affected by the weather.

Some rubbish bins were not emptied in Minster yesterday, but a council spokesman has said normal collections will take place today.

An additional lorry has also been sent to collect the bins from Minster.

There are no trains running from Sheerness to the mainland and a spokesman for Southeastern said they will be putting on replacement buses.

Minster, Halfway and Queenborough primary schools have all taken the decision to close early.
