A stairwell that had been a magnet for antisocial behaviour has been transformed into a storage area thanks to a group of students.

Young people studying bricklaying and multi-trade skills at Canterbury College Swale Campus started the work near the entrance to Sheerness Swimming Pool, off Royal Road, last Wednesday, and were putting the finishing touches to it yesterday (Tuesday).

As part of their work experience, they have been helping out in the community, and working for housing association AmicusHorizon in the process.

The Bridge Road-based college is part of the Beachfields Partnership, which aims to revamp the area surrounding the leisure centre and sand pit.

The new facility will be used as a store room for seafront officer Ian Arnell’s equipment.

College vocational team leader Kurt Salter said it was a good example of different groups working together for everyone’s benefit.

He said: “The students have done a brilliant job. The partnership supplied the materials and we supplied the labour.”
