Supermarket chain Aldi intends to close its Sheerness store and open a larger branch at Queenborough, it has been revealed.

In a shock announcement, the German-owned company said it wanted to pull out of the town centre, having been there since 2005, and have a 'more spacious store' at Neats Court.

"The Sheerness store has been a great success but it is one of the smaller Aldi stores in the country and does not offer the space and facilities found in newer Aldi stores," it said.

"Aldi has wanted an improved store for some time and the new store would enable Aldi to bring the very best Aldi has to offer to Sheppey.

"A modern new building would provide a more spacious store with room for the full Aldi product range, wider aisles and a bigger car park."

Leaflets outlining the plans have been printed to let customers and people living nearby know about the proposals.

A planning application is yet to be submitted but it is understood Aldi is considering building the new branch on land between the A249 and Queenborough Road.

Queenborough representative on Swale council, Cllr Cameron Beart (Con), welcomed Aldi's continued investment in the area – its new £50 million distribution depot at Neats Court is expected to open next year – but said he also had concerns.

"I am interested in their proposals for a new larger store but do have some reservations.

"My first concern is what happens to the Sheerness site. And another concern is a lot of people walk there while Neats Court is very much for drivers."
