Part of Sheerness High Street was closed yesterday afternoon after a collision between a moped and a car.

Tailbacks up to Power Station Road in Halfway formed while police, paramedics and fire crews attended the scene near the junction with Maple Street just after noon.

The 16-year-old moped rider, from Sheerness, was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with a head injury, a broken leg and cut arms. His injuries were not life threatening and the driver of the car was unhurt.

Firefighters from Sheerness were called to deal with some oil which spilt from the damaged moped and threatened to run into nearby drains.

The road remained blocked for about 40 minutes.
