A two-car crash has led to traffic delays on the Isle of Sheppey.

Two cars were in collision on the Lower Road at Eastchurch at 1.25pm.

One car ended up with a smashed windscreen and the other had its rear axle ripped off by the force of the collision.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are currently in attendance and have arranged for the vehicles to be recovered. No serious injuries have been reported."

The crash is near the entrance to a waste tip.

It is the latest in a spate of crashes along that stretch of road which links the holiday parks of Leysdown to the mainland.

Resident Tony Isitt, 61, has launched a campaign to have white lines painted down the centre of the road to stop cars from overtaking.

He said: “This stretch of road is a disaster waiting to happen. There are many hidden entrances to people’s properties and a number of dips which hide oncoming traffic.

"But motorists drive too fast and take risks. It needs a solid white line down the middle to stop drivers overtaking.”

He has had his own car written off along the road and his daughter was left in a wheelchair for nine months after having an arm ripped off by a car while waiting at a bus stop when she was 18, more than 20 years ago.

Mr Isitt said: “This was not an isolated incident. I have spoken to Kent Highways but they won’t do anything until there is a serious crash.

"But it will be too late then. Ideally, this stretch of road should have a 30mph limit. Surely KCC needs to keep the roads safe?”
