Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash that shut a main road in both directions.

Two fire engines were called to the accident, involving two vehicles, on the Lower Road near Eastchurch shortly after 1.30pm.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said crews found all of the people involved out of their vehicles.

Police closed the road between Brambledown and the Eastchurch Road junction, which leads to the Kingsborough Manor estate.

People heading to the east end of the Island had to use the narrow Plough Road because Eastchurch Road is closed for eight weeks while a new gas pipe is being installed.

Drivers were reporting delays of more than an hour.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to the Lower Road at 1.26pm following a report of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

"Two people were reported to have been injured and the South East Coast Ambulance Service were called."

An ambulance spokesman confirmed two people had been treated for what was believed to be minor injuries before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

Police said two telegraph cables were also in the road after the poles snapped.

BT engineers managed to cut the cables down but the road remained closed while oil was removed.

Shortly before 5pm, police said one of the vehicles had been recovered and the road had been partially reopened.
