Last year's Love Sheppey event at Barton's Point was a success

An exhibition to celebrate the Island’s creative talent and unique heritage was well attended, despite torrential rain.

The Love Sheppey event took place at Barton’s Point Coastal Park, off Marine Parade, Sheerness, on Saturday.

More than 400 visitors went along to look at displays by almost 30 people.

There was work on show by a whole range of exhibitors including artists, sculptors and jewellery makers.

The idea of the event, which was the secret behind the stones which had been hidden around the Island, was to support the hidden creative community.

Anyone who had found a pebble was invited to take it along, and about 100 were recorded on a map of Sheppey to show where they had been discovered, and everyone who took one was given a cupcake.

There was also a prize draw for guests who took along special marked Love Sheppey stones.

Organiser Laurie Harpum said: “Whatever kind of work the artists brought to the day they all shared the common theme that creativity is a big part of their lives and they set themselves professional quality standards in their work.

“The Love Sheppey stones took off in a way I never expected and for me the most exciting thing was meeting the artists that are on my doorstep.

“Mostly the day was possible because of the generosity and goodwill of the people of Sheppey.”

She thanked Mandy Shade for donating the use of the venue, Creative People and Places for a £2,000 grant, all those who donated marquees, everyone who went along and her family and friends for their support.

It is hoped a similar event will be held next year.
