We committed rugby suicide, says Sheppey coach Frank Davis

Sheppey coach Frank Davis

Frank Davis accused his team of "rugby suicide" after witnessing Sheppey’s winning run come to an end on Saturday.

Four straight wins had lifted Sheppey out of the Kent 1 relegation places but head coach Davis couldn’t hide his disappointment after seeing his side lose 26-23 at Ashford.

"The defeat was gutting and we committed rugby suicide," said Davis.

"Conditions underfoot weren’t great but it was nice to see that we could change through the gears.

"We pulled away when we needed to and slowed it down at other times but then five minutes before half-time we pressed the panic button.

"We gifted them a try and they then put us under pressure. In the second half it was a comedy of errors and soul-destroying. We let them rattle us and the closer the game got the more panic set in and that wasn’t pleasing."

Brad Box successfully kicked two of four penalties for Sheppey in the opening stages but Ashford hit back with a try.

The visitors regained the lead with another penalty and a try from Dylan Davies was converted to give Sheppey a 16-7 lead.

Paul Cowie scored with a catch and drive to make it 16-14 after a conversion but Paul Clifford replied at the other end and Box kicked the extras to put Sheppey 23-14 ahead.

Ashford finished the game with tries from JG Murray and brother Liam to take the points.
