A broken down lorry caused traffic chaos for hundreds of motorists last night.

The A249 Maidstone bound carriageway came to a stand still after a HGV broke down on the Stockbury roundabout at 4.30pm.

Police shut the roundabout until the vehicle was recovered at 5.50pm. This led to a knock on effect for traffic travelling from Detling Hill towards Sittingbourne and also the Sittingbourne exits off the M2 London and coastbound carriageways.

To add insult to injury there were further delays and congestion for those heading along the A2 Rainham bound due to roadworks in Newington.
