A car fire brought traffic to a standstill on the A249 this evening.

Motorists were queuing Maidstone-bound between Stockbury and Junction 7 of the M20.

A number of police vehicles and two fire engines - one from Sittingbourne and another from Rochester - were sent to the dual carriageway.

The fire, in a Vauxhall, happened at around 6.50pm near the Roydens car dealership.

Motorists said traffic initially ground to a halt, but it is understood to have started slowly moving again at 7.10pm.

The hold-up comes just hours after a car overturned heading in the opposite direction, near Detling aerodrome this afternoon.
