Community champions at a supermarket, who have already delivered 300 meals to families in need are now looking to complete 12 acts of kindness during December.

Morrisons workers Monique Brazier and Sally Candy have been raising money, making food parcels and more for people in need in Sittingbourne.

Both work at the Mill Way store and in the months running up to December have received more than £3,000 in donations.

The pair are helping charities, including Clic Sargent which helps support young people with cancer and various food banks including the Swale food bank and the Bus Shelter, plus The Salvation Army and Gillingham-based Street Angels.

Monique, 30, said: “On Halloween we held a haunted house in our garden centre, with Covid restrictions, for one-and-a-half days which raised just over £1,500 for Clic Sargent.

“Then we held our usual poppy appeal which was totally different to last year as not many people came in, but we still managed to raise another £1,500.

“We’ve now been making up hampers for the Salvation Army which are being filled with biscuits, sweets and selection boxes.”

The community champion team have also been providing children in the borough with free schools meals, which the schools pay for with help from the government.

They helped deliver more than 300 meals last week.

Community champion Monique, who also works on the customer service desk, said plans for a Santa’s grotto were foiled this year due to the pandemic.

She added: “We’re going to be doing a 12 acts of kindness from December 10 where we’ll be doing something kind in the community, such as donating our own time to food banks, handing out mince pies to customers or helping a family in need.

“We’ve been in contact with some of the food banks in the borough to nominate a family who we will buy their Christmas dinner for - turkey, trimmings, the lot.”

She said: “They’ve not had time off and have had to work through everything, so we’re looking to do something for them soon as it’s been really hard for them and we do get a lot of stick, but it’s all worth it in the end.”
