Fire crews have left the scene of an industrial blaze at a recycling centre in Milton Regis, which sent a huge smoke plume into the air.

Calls were made to the fire service this morning around 8.40am following reports of a fire in Gas Road, Sittingbourne.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene and crews worked to extinguish the blaze behind the Sweeep Kuusakoski recycling centre.

Large amounts of black smoke could be seen coming from the industrial estate off Mill Way.

Sweeep commercial manager Justin Greenaway​ confirmed the fire had taken place on its premises and related to a bunker of waste electronics material.

He said: "The fire is separate from anything like machinery or buildings... just a bit of residual smoke and steam now.

"No one injured and our 24-7 site presence spotted fire promptly."

Firefighters remained at the scene fighting the blaze until 2pm and nearby residents were asked to close their windows as a precaution.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighting work has now finished at the scene of a fire in Gas Road, Sittingbourne.

"Three fire engines attended and crews used hose reel jets and water from a hydrant to extinguish approximately 80 tonnes of waste recycling materials which had caught alight."

No casualties were reported and it’s believed the fire started accidentally.

The earlier advice for residents in nearby areas to close windows and doors is no longer in place.

It's not the first time a blaze has broken out at the recycling depot in Milton Regis.

In 2013 around 300 tonnes of electrical equipment waiting to be recycled was destroyed by a massive fire.
