FIVE people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the M2 between Sittingbourne and Faversham.

The coastal-bound carriageway was closed for some time between junctions five and six on Wednesday, causing massive tailbacks.

Sittingbourne and Faversham fire crews attended the scene and cut one driver free from a Mercedes car. He sustained minor cuts and was taken to hospital along with four other people who needed treatment for minor injuries.

The coastbound carriageway between junctions five and six was opened again at around 11.50am. Eight vehicles were recovered.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said that although it had been snowing heavily at the time of the accident, the carriageway was not icy.

The weather conditions caused two other collisions on both carriageways at around the same time which did not involve injuries. It is understood none of the vehicles involved overturned.

Motorists are still being advised to drive in accordance with the poor conditions, keeping a safe distance and adjusting their speed.
