This was the sight that greeted anyone trying to negotiate this country lane near Sittingbourne.

The unsightly mess was found in South Green Lane, near Stockbury, by Pam Penfold who was on her way to visit Bicknor Church.

She said: “I was horrified. You just couldn’t get up the road, so we just had to turn around.

“There were mattresses, boxes, one of those great big builder’s sacks.”

It happened last week and the lanes around Stockbury, Upchurch, Iwade, Newington and Lower Halstow are fly-tipping hotspots.

When rubbish is dumped in roads it is the responsibility of Kent County Council (KCC) to clear it up.

But KCC said no report had been made about the waste in South Green Lane, part of the Maidstone borough.

The latest statistics show Swale is one of worst boroughs in Kent for fly-tipping with thousands of cases reported last year.
