Jumping dog sparks kitchen fire after toy left on hob in Prince Charles Avenue, Sittingbourne on firework night

A jumping dog is thought to have sparked a kitchen fire after a toy was left on a hob.

The pet is believed to have jumped up and accidentally turned on the electric cooker, which set fire to a plastic bag and a small toy that had been left on the hob.

The drama unfolded at a house in Prince Charles Avenue in Sittingbourne yesterday.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was called to reports of smoke coming from a home at 10.30am.

Two fire engines attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet and took just over half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

One person at the scene was treated for suspected smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

A spokesman for KFRS said: “It’s believed a plastic bag and a small toy had been left on an electric hob, which caught alight when the hob accidentally got switched on by a dog jumping up.”
