The centre and its car park have been shut since and, a statement released today, said it would not reopen until tomorrow at the earliest.

A spokesman for Swale Community Leisure, which runs The Swallows, said: "Unfortunately our contractors are unable to safely carry out any temporary repairs, therefore the centre will remain completely closed until at least midday tomorrow when we will give a further update.

"Thank you all for your cooperation during this difficult time."

He added that members could use the facilities "for today only" at Sheppey Leisure Complex, which is also run by the trust.

The road between Sittingbourne's Avenue of Remembrance and the Jobcentre also remains closed "for safety reasons" after pieces of metal roofing came off of The Swallows in yesterday's storm.
