Part of the A249 was shut for more than 24 hours due to a fuel spillage yesterday morning.

The busy route was closed Maidstone-bound after a lorry’s fuel tank ruptured near Pilgrims Way in Detling, near Maidstone.

There are delays of more than an hour

The accident happened just after 7am yesterday (Monday) on Detling Hill and the A249 was shut between Junction 5 of the M2 and Junction 7 of the M20.

Police were called and the route between Maidstone and Sittingbourne had to be closed in both directions to release trapped traffic.

There were delays of more than an hour.

The route has since been reopened after emergency works took place.
