Man flown to London hospital after suffering arm injuries in accident with Biffa dustcart

An investigation has been launched after a man's arm was seriously injured in a dustcart accident.

The 28-year-old man was flown to hospital with serious arm injuries after being hurt in the dustcart accident in Iwade.

Land and air ambulance crews were called to Pintail Drive in Iwade at just after 11am today.

He was said to have suffered a serious injury after it's believed his lower arm and hand became caught in the Biffa refuse lorry.

He was treated at the scene and then flown to King's College Hospital in London.

A spokesman for Biffa, which provides refuse services for Swale council, said: “This was a nasty incident, and the thoughts of the entire Biffa team are with their injured colleague.

“Biffa invests heavily in training its operational staff in all aspects of safe working, and has an excellent safety record.

"We are investigating how this accident occurred, and will take whatever remedial action is required to improve on-the-job safety."

Councillor David Simmons, Swale council cabinet member for environment and rural affairs, said: “We were extremely concerned to hear of the serious injury sustained by a member of Biffa’s team.

"Our thoughts are with the Biffa employee who has been injured, and his family.

"He is receiving treatment for his injuries and we will keep in close contact with Biffa to ensure we are updated on his progress."
