Police helicopter circling Sittingbourne as part of search for assault suspect

A police helicopter was circling above Sittingbourne this morning searching for an assault suspect.

The chopper was seen hovering at low level for over an hour from about 9.30am.

Police were alerted to a report of a police officer being assaulted in the Crown Quay Lane area at about 8.25am.

A suspect fled and has not yet been located.

In an attempt to locate the man, a helicopter was deployed in an effort to scour the surrounding area.

The search is ongoing.

A police spokesman said: "At around 8.25am, a man is reported to have assaulted a Kent Police officer in the Crown Quay Lane area of Sittingbourne before leaving the scene on foot.

"A search to locate the suspect, which has been assisted by the National Police Air Service, is ongoing.

"The officer, who was responding to a report of a disturbance at a private address, was not seriously injured."
