The end of term was marked with a prize-giving ceremony at Westlands Primary School.

Key Stage 1’s assembly, held on July 22, saw each pupil awarded and congratulated for their efforts in various aspects throughout the year.

These included 100% attendance, 100% effort, most increased confidence, most independent learner, achieving their best and making good progress.

In all there were six winners from each year group, two winners in each class.

Mayor of Swale Cllr Anita Walker attended the Key Stage 2 presentation in the morning, which also included a speech by Louise Hopkins praising lollipop man and former caretaker Stewart Jordan for his services. He has been with the school since 1992 but is retiring from the post.

Awards handed out included 100% attendance and class nominations for individual achievement.

The PTFA Award for endeavour was given to Phoebe, 11, in the form of a shield with her name engraved upon it.

The Governors’ Award for achievement went to Bethany, 11, in the form of a silver cup.

For the 45 children who achieved 100% attendance, their names were put into a hat and one youngster selected at random. The winner, Year 6 pupil Isaac, was awarded with a certificate, a medal and a new bicycle and helmet.

The 11-year-old said: “I’ve really enjoyed this year, especially as we worked so hard for our SATS and we did really well.

“I can’t wait to ride my new bike.”

Mrs Hopkins said: “Our prize-giving assemblies are the perfect time to reward individuals for their outstanding achievements and this also demonstrates to all our pupils that effort is rewarded and that the rewards are considerable.”

Year 6 leavers

Two days later the Mayor of Swale was invited back to the site in Homewood Avenue, Sittingbourne, for the Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly, which saw staff wish the children well for the next phase of their education at secondary school.

Each child was presented with a glass featuring the school logo as a keepsake.
