He will stay until the end of the Christmas term and then take up his new job at Barton Court Grammar in Canterbury in January.

In a letter to parents he said: "It is with real sadness that I will be leaving Borden at the end of the Christmas term.

"As many of you know, I became headteacher at Borden in September 2013 having spent the previous eight years working at Highsted Grammar School.

"It has been my privilege to have undertaken my first headship at Borden and to have served the needs of students and the community in Sittingbourne and Sheppey for 14 years."

The school, which has been on the same site since 1928, has 795 pupils of which 198 are in the sixth form.

It became a sports college in September 2006 and achieved academy status in January 2012.

Mr Hopkins will replace Ian Macaulay at the 970-pupil Barton Court Grammar in Longport, Canterbury.

He resigned after revealing one of his children had been diagnosed with severe autism.

He told parents: "As you can imagine, the challenges this places on a family can be overwhelming and for this reason I have made the decision to step down."

He will work part-time at the academy until he leaves in December but will continue in a "leadership support role" within the school.

Executive head Kim Cardus is taking on some of his work until Mr Hopkins joins.

Mr Macaulay joined the co-educational Barton Court in 2017 after more than seven years in the senior leadership team of Rochester Grammar School.
