Sittingbourne boss Gary Abbott playing team selection by ear ahead of Ryman League Division 1 South trip to Chipstead

Sittingbourne boss Gary Abbott

Gary Abbott admits Sittingbourne’s present plight means he is unsure what team he will field until 90 minutes before matches.

Abbott (pictured) takes his side to Chipstead on Saturday, hoping to avenge a 3-0 Ryman League Division 1 South home defeat earlier this season in a performance he described as "unacceptable".

Abbott said: "It’s not the best way to go on, but it’s been the same for the last few weeks. I know the five or six regulars will be there but I don’t know who else will turn up. I wait until 1.30pm and then name the team."

Midweek training is also difficult, with the squad having one session at the gym at North West Kent College in Crayford where Abbott’s assistant, Richard Brady, is a teacher.

He added: "Not everyone can get there because of work and it’s hard but in our position we have got to accept it. We have let in silly goals in the last five or six weeks but haven’t had time to work on set-pieces at the training ground."

Eight of Abbott’s squad are full-time students at the college under Brady, while others do their own thing, including goalkeeper Matt Reed, who trains at Dartford.

Bourne’s home game against Fleet was postponed last Saturday with puddles dotted around the pitch. The game was called off just before 1pm and has now been re-arranged for Tuesday, April 5.
