A POST office and part of a police station had to be evacuated on Friday morning after a suspect package was reported.

Police were called to the main post office in Centrral Avenue, Sittingbourne at 5.45am.

Central Avenue was closed and the post office and an administrative part of the police station next door were evacuated for safety reasons.

The contents of the package were found to be harmless and it was declared safe at 8.15am.

Central Avenue was been reopened and evacuated staff allowed back to their offices.

Chief Insp Ian Hall said: "Thankfully the package turned out to be harmless and we were able to deal with the incident swiftly.

"However, with incidents like these we must be cautious and ensure that public safety is the number one priority. I would also like to thank residents for their patience this morning."
