Thousands of pounds worth of grass-cutting equipment, electrical goods and alcohol has been stolen from Newington Cricket Club.

The break-in at the clubhouse off Coldharbour Lane, Bobbing, was discovered this morning.

Club chairman Jerry Overbury said: "I came to cut the outfield this morning and found the gate and doors open.

"It's a crying shame that they target clubs like this. Umpteen man hours were put in to completely refurbish the clubhouse, which we opened in March.

"We have kept it as secure as we could. Ironically, we were just about to add CCTV."

Two mowers, numerous unopened bottles of spirits, a television and two sofas were among the items taken.

They are also thought to have used a large vehicle, given the size of the sofas.

It is not the first setback for Newington CC, a community club whose members have raised thousands of pounds for Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

In November 2016, vandals drove vehicles over the outfield, damaging the playing surface.

"The cricket club is a bit out of the way, so it's an easy target," Mr Overbury added.

Police are investigating and officers were at the ground today.

A force spokesman said: "At present no arrests have been made and anyone with information is asked to call police on 01795 419119, quoting XY/051350/18.

"Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in Kent anonymously on 0800 555111."
