Residents in Sittingbourne have been kicking up a stink about a foul stench that has hung over the town in recent days.

The Environment Agency confirmed it had received complaints from people living in the area and sent officers to several sites to identify potential sources of the odour.

A spokesman said: “We believe the odour came from spreading activities south of Sittingbourne, and are working with the site operators to reduce the impact of their activities.

The smell has been causing problems for Sittingbourne residents

“We expect the odour to significantly reduce over the next two days.

“This time of year is an essential time of year for many farming activities, and it is common practice for sludge to be spread on farmland for agricultural benefits.

“We are working with our partners at Swale council to improve the situation for local residents, and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Swale council confirmed it was monitoring the situation.

A spokesman said: “At this time of year farmers are working long hours to harvest crops, fertilise the fields and plant the next crop.

“Spreading materials such as paper sludge, sewage sludge, compost and farm yard manure ensures that the next crop get the nutrients that they need and it ensures that these materials get recycled rather than disposed of.

“These are recognised agricultural practices, which mainly go unnoticed by residents. Any odours usually subside soon after the operation is completed.

“We are working with the Environment Agency to ensure that all of these activities are completed in line with best practice.

“If you would like to report such an odour in Swale please contact the EA on 0800 807060, or Swale BC on 01795 417850.”
