Guitar heroes, singing stars, mini-Olympic sportsmen and women and a kmfm DJ were all on hand to help Homewood School celebrate its 60th birthday.

The day-long series of special events were organised by Year 13 BTEC business students and in particular, Grace Bowen-Woodcock and Alice Murton.

Grace explained: “A group of five of us decided to do something for charity and we put together three different events - a Guitar Hero competition in the theatre, a mini-Olympics in the sports hall and the Your Voice recording event.

“Students were also charged £1 to come to school in non-uniform.”

The three charities benefiting are Children In Need, Demelza House Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Adding to the fun was kmfm breakfast DJ Webbo who reported back to co-host Kirstyn in the studio having first caught the school bus in with the students.

He said: “It was the first time I’d caught a school bus - and everyone was so well behaved!”

Students packed around the Your Voice mobile recording studio, a karaoke-style unit that allowed students to record their own CD, while in the Sinden Theatre budding Eric Claptons proved their worth with the computer challenge, Guitar Hero, organised by students William Grey and Jonathan White.

The sports hall saw a mini-Olympics in action with basketball, table tennis and badminton among the serious challenges - and pillow fights among the less serious.
