Thousands of people got a taste of what it takes to be a firefighter in Ramsgate fire station's open day at the weekend.

Visitors to the new station in Newington Road on Saturday took part in various activities.

Children were handed activity trail cards to work their way through four zones to learn about firefighting and fire safety tips.

The day is one of 13 taking place at fire stations across the county throughout the summer by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Members of the public met with firefighters and support staff for the shows, activities and family fun all aimed at encouraging fire and road safety.

Youngsters climbed aboard the fire engines on display, got to grips putting out a fire with the hose reel jets firefighters use every day, watched demonstrations and were taken on tours around the station.

Neil Roby, Ramsgate fire station crew manager, said: "Saturday’s fantastically fun Family Open Day event in Ramsgate went brilliantly.

"The sun was shining and we welcomed thousands from the local community into the station to learn about fire and road safety, meet partner agencies such as Kent Police and the RNLI, and discover more about KFRS services.

"Our crew was there to share fire safety tips and undergo live demonstrations, and our Community Safety team was also on-hand to offer vital home safety advice.

"Families and friends enjoyed our Hose the House Down game, watched cooking fire demonstrations, saw hazard perception rooms, followed our new Activity Trail card and climbed aboard fire engines.

"We’d like to thank everyone who helped make Ramsgate fire station’s open day such an educational and enjoyable event."
