After a two-year battle with bladder cancer an artist is to once again put on an exhibition of his work.

In 2016, Peter Garrard Askew was diagnosed while his work was on display at Ramgsate's York Street Gallery.

Now in remission the 78-year-old, who signs his art as Garrard, wants to raise money for the upcoming charity Fight Bladder Cancer.

The father-of-three will be raffling a limited-edition copy of his work Montage: Ramsgate Royal Harbour (number one of six) in a bid to draw in funds for the charity.

Mr Askew, of Irchester Street, said: "I will be presenting my driftwood and concept work with a selection of local sketches.

"By sheer coincidence Andrew Winterbottom and Melanie Costin are both artists and in remission from bladder cancer too.
"Together they have both set up the charity during their illness.

"It is worthy of some support and collections will be taken during the exhibition."

Mr Askew, who has seven grandchildren, says that despite his fight with cancer, he feels great.

"I'm now cancer free with three monthly check ups for four years," he added.

"It can always come back? No chance."

The retired freelance design consultant added: "I cannot fault the NHS at all, they were amazing.

"Both teams at QEQM and Canterbury for chemotherapy and radiotherapy were so good.

"I am very grateful that my doctor saw it early, and for the work of my consultants.

"I feel great, I feel as though I'm only 40, despite my cancer battle."

The exhibition will be held at York Street Gallery in Ramsgate from Wednesday, September 5 until Wednesday, September 12.

Raffle tickets will be on sale to win the framed artwork, with proceeds going to Fight Bladder Cancer, which is the only UK-based bladder cancer charity.

The raffle will be drawn on the final day of the exhibition.
