Almost a dozen blades were seized by police in just one day during a sweep of parks and green spaces in Ramsgate and Margate.

A knife detector was also set up outside The Goose pub last night in Ramsgate to stop people bringing knives into the town centre.

The crackdown was carried out by police to send out the message that knife crime will not be tolerated.

On Wednesday, officers recovered 11 bladed items, including a bread knife and utility knife, during the sweep in Margate and Ramsgate.

In a separate initiative, the knife detector at The Goose was used as a deterrent to anyone thinking of taking a weapon out with them into the town centre.

No weapons were found on anyone going into the pub in Harbour Street.

Sergeant Stephen Moat, of Thanet's Community Safety Unit, says the response from both the public and the premises was overwhelmingly positive.

"Those out in the town were happy with the actions we are taking to ensure their safety," he said.

"We will continue to run operations of this kind to ensure the message gets out that carrying a knife is completely unacceptable.

"We will always seek to prosecute anyone found with a blade."
